Vision Screening in South Africa

Kids Vision SA Mission

Through local and international sponsors, KiDS VISION SA will provide vital eye screenings to underserved and underprivileged children in South Africa in both remote and urban areas.

Goals and Future Prospects

The goal is to create awareness of the benefits of early detection, intervention, and the subsequent prevention of irreversible vision loss within underprivileged communities, and thereby normalizing early vision screenings for all children throughout South Africa

Future prospects include the utilization of a mobile clinic to bring healthcare to children in rural areas. With over 45 million people dependent on public hospitals, district and central hospitals can often become over-burdened. Mobile vision screening clinics are an immediate solution to providing quality, affordable primary healthcare to all communities.

“The Plusoptix vision screener is a useful tool for the detection of amblyopia risk factors in pediatric populations. The Plusoptix vision screener provides an accurate, fast, user-friendly, and portable way to detect amblyopia risk factors. Because the software automatically evaluates the refractive error and ocular alignment and gives a simple referral grade, the Plusoptix screener may offer a reasonable way of providing large-scale vision screenings at relatively low costs.”

The first 1000 days of a child’s life is the most rapid period of brain growth

This window is the ideal time to effectively detect and treat any possible vision problems that can cause permanent vision loss

Studies show that treatment outcomes are better for children younger than 4 years. Children younger than 4 years are also more at risk of missing early treatment as screenings take place at an older age.
